A. Information about NARGEL:

NARGEL – Nanoreinforced Hydrogels for Tissue Engineering Applications

The main goal of the project is the preparation of hybrid polymer/silica biomaterials that will exhibit tailored physical, biological and mechanical properties as well as predictable degradation behavior suitable for biomedical applications. NARGEL proposes a novel approach for the preparation of porous hybrid organic-inorganic materials for tissue engineering applications. The strategy that was followed is based on the reinforcement of already prepared porous membranes and scaffolds with silica in order to improve the mechanical properties. Silica was prepared in situ inside the pores of the porous membranes by the sol-gel method. Polylactic-acid (PLA), polycaprolactone (PCL) and Chitosan (CHT) were the polymers used for the preparation of porous membranes by freeze extraction and freeze gelation methods. Furthermore, in order to achieve covalent bonding between the organic and the inorganic phase a coupling agent was used. The structure, the physicochemical and thermomechanical properties of the obtained hybrid materials were studied using a wide range of characterization techniques while preliminary tests of their bioactivity were performed.

NARGEL is implemented within the framework of the Action «Supporting Postdoctoral Researchers».  Postdoctoral Researcher Christos Pandis is funded to conduct research in the field of biomaterials for tissue engineering applications. International Host of the research project is the Centre of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering (CBIT) at the Polytechnic University of Valencia and Hellenic Host is the Physics Department, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). Scientific Collaborator and Responsible from the Hellenic Host is Assistant Professor Apostolos Kyritsis and Scientific Collaborator from the International Host is the Director of CBIT, Prof. Jose Luis Gomez Ribelles. The research project started on March 23, 2012 and will be completed on April 22, 2015.  Dr Christos Pandis conducted the 2/3 of postdoctoral research at CBIT, Valencia, Spain and 1/3 at NTUA, Athens, Greece. Up to now results of the research project have been presented in 3 publications in International Journals and in 10 Scientific Conferences.
